In Toronto, the Twins clipped the Blue Jays feathers with a 7 to 6 win Tuesday night. Meanwhile, at Comerica Park, the pesky Orioles refused to roll over and play dead. After having a one nothing lead, Detroit’s bats went silent. That allowed the hapless Orioles to feel good. The game went back and forth until finally the Tigers’ new acquisition, Johnny Damon stepped up and crushed the Orioles’ hearts by sending a baseball deep into the Detroit night for a home run, winning the game in extra innings. After the Damon home run, Comerica Park erupted into celebration saluting their heroes with cheers that could be heard as far as Kalamazoo! This weekend is what baseball is all about. It’s Joe Mauer and the Minnesota Twins versus Johnny Damon and the Detroit Tigers on Friday through Sunday. Minnesota has to travel to the jungle to face the Tigers for all three games. The Tigers are percentage points ahead of the Twins at this time. This has all the makings of going down to a one-game playoff. Last year, it was the Twins who won game number 163 and that gave them a Central Division crown over the Tigers. This year looks a lot like last year. It’s Detroit’s and Minnesota’s division to fight over. A reason why I feel the Tigers are stronger than the Twins is because of off-season acquisition Johnny Damon. Damon, who has been in the pressure cooker before with the New York Yankees, knows what October is all about. Damon was a member of the 2009 World Champion New York Yankees! Instead of “Detroit”, people in Michigan might as well call the city “Damontown”. Because when the game is on the line, you want Johnny at the plate.
