For the BHS boys, when they met the Minot High Magicians, Luke Martinez stepped up and showed what champions are made of, giving his team the West Region kingdom.  That wasn’t the only thing that this basketball team had to be proud of.  A legend, Steve Miller, was bestowed the West’s highest honor when he was named coach of the year.  This basketball team isn’t done yet in this reporter’s opinion.  They will begin the road to a State Championship on Thursday, at 1:00 pm.  Coaches Steve Miller and Darin Mattern have a chance to get on the highest mountain in North Dakota and add another chapter in BHS’ rich boys basketball history.

On the girls’ side of things, Greg Amundson’s girls were crowned queens of the West once again.  Even though the BHS girls fell short of the ultimate prize, they can take solace in knowing that their coach also was given the West Region’s highest honor that a coach could receive, the coach of the year award.
Now our attention turns to the State Class A tournament, which will be held in Bismarck on March 6,7, and 8.  There are plenty of questions to be laid out on the hardwood.  Will Amundson be considered the Phil Jackson of high school basketball as his team guns for a 6th straight state title?  Will the Demon boys be crowned two-time state champions, or will there be a new team crowned?  The excitement is only building.  Keep it right here, where champions are born and adorned.
