Detroit, MI. With Phil Coke having another inexcusable night, allowing batters to reach base with ball four and also allowing Boston to score the go ahead run, it looked like the Tigers were heading for another loss. It has been too many times to count on one hand. Leave it to Dan Dickerson to bring excitement to this reporters home! Boston’s bullpen is just like the Tigers. Jhonny Peralta, aka “JP”, got a cookie and sent Comerica Park into pandemonium, giving the Tigers 40 wins on the season. Dan Dickerson’s call of the game was very memorable. If I could find it for you guys I would put it with this story so that you could hear it too. Leave the heroic game winning home run up to the veteran JP. Sometimes you get lucky with certain pitchers. I’ve seen it go the wrong way because of Papa Grande, but on this night Jhonny let out a tremendous roar and propelled the Tigers to win number 40 on the year. It has to feel good for Dan and Jim not to talk about heart break for once. How ironic it was that number 40 was on the mound. Because of his mistakes, it looked like certain failure when Phil Coke inexcusably gave up a go head run. Then enter in the batters box number 27. He seemed to say, “boys, this is our jungle. Come on and take a little ride with me!” For him to do this speaks volumes about what kind of player he is. What a great effort by Drew to even set up the heroic game winning home run by Jhonny Peralta. If he had looked like Phil, that would have been the end of the night for the Tigers. Then we would have been typing a different story. Coke is just inexcusable. We didn’t get him from the Yankees to put ourselves in a bad position. One can only hope that Jhonny’s momentum stays with the team for a while. If I was sitting next to Jim Leyland in the dugout, I would reach out and give him a hug. No manager should have to go through what Leyland has to go through on a night to night basis. Your bullpen should be able to help the starter out, but apparently the Tigers bullpen doesn’t know the meaning of help the starter out. Fortunately, Drew knows the meaning. He got himself out of a jam when Phil Coke couldn’t find the strike zone. More on him later today. I’m not going to send him to Toledo, because that is not what Phil or the Tigers need right now! I will say this. Work with Jeff Jones, because I don’t know how many times we have seen this in this season where the starter does his best and doesn’t get any help from the bullpen. Phil Coke knows better than what he gave us last night. It should have never even come down to Jhonny having to deliver the home run hit. I don’t know what his deal was last night, but this is one defective Coke machine! Jim Leyland cannot have a Coke machine out of order. He needs Phil to throw strikes and not balls.
