Atlanta airport. After months of bickering, and looking like they needed rattles and baby bottles, the NFL and its players finally did the right thing and signed a 10 year CBA that will take the NFL through 2020. In other NFL news, the Indianapolis Colts have inked the four time MVP Payton Manning to a five year deal.

Indianapolis, Indiana. Former MRN announcer Alan Beckwith made ESPN’s play by play debut today. AB replaced Marty Reed who was demoted to the Nationwide play by play for ESPN. AB brings a wealth of NASCAR knowledge to the booth, where he joined 1999 champion Dale Jarrett and crew chief Andy Petrie. AB is the best thing that ESPN could have ever done to enhance their NASCAR coverage.

Save Big Money with Paul

Indianapolis, Indiana. The bigggest week in motorsports started with Big Brown on the pole and looking to deliver. Ned Jarrett would be honored by NASCAR for his Hall of Fame induction. Jarrett was also named the Grand Marshall. But in the end, it was a cheesehead who had the racing gods on his side, getting lucky and holding off the hard-charging Jeff Gordon. It wasn’t Indiana’s day, as Tony Stewart finished sixth. Tony is a native of Columbus, Indiana. Ryan Newman did not have a good day, either, finishing 12th. Carl Edwards, who had the lead by 7 points over Jimmie Johnson going into the Brickyard, finished way back in the field. The Chase will be very interesting. NASCAR has implemented a wild card aspect to it which will benefit Paul Menard with today’s win at the Brickyard. The series moves on to the road course at Watkins Glen New York next week.

One-Two for Stewart Haas

Loudon, New Hampshire. On Sunday, it was good news for the Hoosier State, as two of Indiana’s native sons finished at the top of the leader board for a change. Ryan Newman and Tony Stewart finally put it all together with Ryan winning the pole and the race, and Tony coming in right behind his teammate in second. That’s the way that Stewart’s company should be run. This year will mark the end of Mr. Five- time. Jimmie Johnson, who was lucky to win five championships in a row, finally is feeling what it feels like not to be a winner all the time. He finished in fifth place, allowing the NASCAR world to have the sunlight shine on somebody else. This is the first time all season that you could watch a race and not have it be a ho-hum story. Congratulations to Jimmie Johnson for finally coming in fifth place.

Heartbreak Hotel

Frankfort, Germany. With so much riding on Sunday’s matchup on the pitch, it was time to determine a queen. On Saturday, it was Sweden taking the bronze medal. Would there be a story book ending for the red, white, and blue? For a while on Sunday, hope was on the side of the United States, but there would be a soccer tsunami, and it would come in waves. Hope was lost in the end, as Japan would make sure that there would be no solo act for Solo. After the game, ESPN caught up with Abby Wambach. A clearly dejected Wambach said “I’m sure their country is proud of them.” Japan 3, USA 2 in a shootout. For a while, the tournament looked like the 1999 team that won the World Cup. Instead, the US had to settle for silver.
