On Thursday October 30, when the ‘Cats take on their Central Division rivals the North Iowa Outlaws, it’s bring a kid day.  That means with every adult ticket purchase, an accompanying child’s ticket is free.  Also, on November 29, it’s the Bobcats’ “Toys for Tots” campaign.  Fans can bring a toy to the game for a discounted ticket.  When the ‘Cats score their first goal, the toys will be collected and donated.

Coste’s Phillies One Win Away From World Series Championship

Tampa Bay’s magical run was fun to watch while it lasted, but now it’s time to focus on former Fargo/Moorhead RedHawks Chris Coste.  Coste, who had been languishing in the minor leagues, is one win away from tasting the thrill of being on top of the baseball world.  The city of Philadelphia has not tasted the thrill of any professional title since the 1980s.  Coste will join fellow North Dakotan Darin Erstad as a world champion.

Johnson Penalized, But Finishes Second

Hampton, GA – The #99 Bob Osbourne crew and their driver (Carl Edwards) did a famous back flip; meanwhile, all eyes are on Jimmie Johnson as he closes in on Cale Yarborough’s three title record.  Johnson was given the pole after qualifying was yet again washed out (which meant that the field had to be set on driver points) and was also given the first pit stall.  Johnson would prove yet again that when things look bleak, never count out a Chad Knaus led crew.  After Johnson was given a penalty, it looked like the rest of the field would be able to challenge for the Chase for the Nextel Cup, but Jimmie Johnson showed why he is this era’s “King of NASCAR.”  Going into Hampton, Johnson had a 149 point lead over the “Biff.”  Johnson now extends to a 183 point lead over Greg Biffle.  From Hampton, now the series goes to Fort Worth.

‘Cats to Face Outlaws and Thunder

By Jeremiah Boyce · Comments (0)
Friday, October 24th, 2008
The Bismarck Bobcats are in the midst of a long road swing which has had Bismarck away from the friendly confines of the SportsCenter until next weekend.  The Bobcats, who outworked their opponents last weekend, are looking for more of the same, except this time they are looking for a 4-point weekend.  First it’s the Outlaws tonight, who the Bobcats have not beaten in 21 straight, at the North Iowa Ice Arena in Mason City, followed up by another rematch with the Thunder on Saturday at the Albert Lea City Arena.  David Bosner, who will be between the pipes tonight for the ‘Cats, is one of the top ten goalies in the North American Hockey League.  Can’t be at the game?  Watch ice cold NAHL action on the B2 Network and listen to the best play-by-play voice in the league, Skip Berry, or tune-in to SuperTalk 1270 for all of the bone crushing action.

Behind the Bench: Byron Pool

By Jeremiah Boyce · Comments (0)
Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

In this JB SportsCorner exclusive, we take you behind the scenes of what it’s like to be a head coach in the eyes of Byron Pool.  The native of Unity, Saskatchewan, Canada took over for the now departed Dane Litke as head coach of the Bismarck Bobcats.  Byron is now in his first full year at the helm.

During Tuesday’s practice at the VFW SportsCenter, I noticed that Coach Pool was talking to his troops about passion.  When asked what that comment was about, he stated, “I think that they could show a little bit more love for the game. I think when our guys are here, they work really really hard, but I think sometimes there is just a little bit of passion missing.”
After Bismarck’s recent setbacks over this last weekend in Mason City and Owatanna, I asked the coach what he told his Bobcats.  ”I think we were the dominant team in both games. I told them that if they could keep up with that work ethic and that attitude the goals will come,” Pool stated, “it’s pretty early in the season yet, and were looking to get better throughout the year.”
One of the outstanding areas, so far, in the 08-09 campaign is Bismarck’s ability to kill off penalties.  ”Right now it’s been good. We’ve only given up one goal in our last twenty-three chances.  We’ve only given up two goals in our last three weekends,” Pool said, “We’ve brought it from seventy percent at the showcase, and now it’s eighty-four percent. Hopefully we can continue with that trend.”  Coach Pool hopes to be the top in the league with penalty kills.
When asked who would be tapped to play in between the pipes this upcoming weekend, Coach Pool hadn’t determined a starter for Saturday, but said #1 David Bosner would get the start on Friday against the Outlaws.
