From the word ‘go’ on Sunday night, the US women’s soccer team had one thing in mind. They wanted to prove to the rest of the world that they belong on the top of the mountain. Who better to start the explosion than number ten, Carli Lloyd? Lloyd was wearing the captain’s wristband for this match, and she played like a captain, cutting through the Japanese defense like a hot knife through butter. Before they even knew what hit them, the Japanese were already down four to nothing! But it was not just Carli who made sure the US would go out on top of the mountain, it was the whole team. They did not want to crumble on the stage, and it was clear that they would play together as a team, with several members of the ’99 team watching. The 2015 women’s team wanted to put the spotlight back on American soccer, where it has not been for sixteen years. The Japanese could only muster up two goals, which was not enough to deny the US their third world title.
