Tony, Tony, Tony! I know that you are a Super Bowl-winning coach, but your recent comments drew my ire. Even though this is America and we are all entitled to our own opinion, I feel there is a better way to handle your beliefs about Michael Sam.

“I wouldn’t have taken him,” said former Bucs and Colts coach Tony Dungy, now an analyst for NBC. “Not because I don’t believe Michael Sam should have a chance to play, but I wouldn’t want to deal with all of it. It’s not going to be totally smooth … things will happen.”

Saying that isn’t right, because Dungy is supposed to be a role model. Instead of making a comment to the Tampa Tribune about the firestorm that will be around Sam, how about if you go back into coaching and coach Sam yourself? If you go back into coaching and work with Sam, you will learn that homosexual people are no different than any other person. Even with Sam’s sexuality, he should be looked upon as any other man.

The St. Louis Rams should welcome him with open arms. Sam is competing for a roster spot with the Rams, but it’s unknown if he’ll make the team. He’ll have to work hard, but he should be treated equally. Whatever happened to the days when sexuality didn’t matter and it only mattered how much you love the game?
