Johnson Penalized, But Finishes Second

By Jeremiah Boyce

Hampton, GA – The #99 Bob Osbourne crew and their driver (Carl Edwards) did a famous back flip; meanwhile, all eyes are on Jimmie Johnson as he closes in on Cale Yarborough’s three title record.  Johnson was given the pole after qualifying was yet again washed out (which meant that the field had to be set on driver points) and was also given the first pit stall.  Johnson would prove yet again that when things look bleak, never count out a Chad Knaus led crew.  After Johnson was given a penalty, it looked like the rest of the field would be able to challenge for the Chase for the Nextel Cup, but Jimmie Johnson showed why he is this era’s “King of NASCAR.”  Going into Hampton, Johnson had a 149 point lead over the “Biff.”  Johnson now extends to a 183 point lead over Greg Biffle.  From Hampton, now the series goes to Fort Worth.
